Kia Accelerates EV Expansion with Major Investment in Mexico

A new manufacturing investment will bring electric vehicle production to Mexico, strengthening Kia’s regional operations while supporting the growing demand for sustainable mobility across North America

Monterrey, Nuevo León, 30 July 2026 – Kia is taking another major step in its electric vehicle journey with a planned investment of $649 million to expand electric vehicle production in Mexico. The move reflects the company’s long-term commitment to growing its electric mobility business while strengthening manufacturing capabilities in one of its key production hubs.

The investment will support production of the Kia EV3, a fully electric compact SUV that is currently manufactured in South Korea. Beginning in early August, production will shift to Kia’s plant in Nuevo León, Mexico, following upgrades to the existing production line. Rather than building an entirely new facility, the company is modernizing its current operations to improve manufacturing efficiency.

A significant share of the vehicles produced in Mexico is expected to serve the domestic market, supporting the country’s growing interest in electric mobility. Expanding local production can also improve vehicle availability while helping reduce delivery times for customers in the region.

The investment also highlights the increasing importance of Mexico in Kia’s global manufacturing strategy. The country has become a valuable production center for the automotive industry because of its skilled workforce, established supply chain, and strong export capabilities. By expanding electric vehicle production in Mexico, Kia gains greater flexibility to meet changing market demand across North America and other international markets.

The project aligns with Kia’s broader strategy of expanding its global electric vehicle portfolio. The company has announced plans to introduce more electric models over the coming years while increasing production capacity in key manufacturing locations. Mexico is expected to play an important role in supporting these long-term growth plans as demand for electric vehicles continues to rise worldwide.

Industry analysts view investments like this as an indication that automakers are continuing to strengthen their electric vehicle manufacturing networks despite evolving market conditions. Instead of relying on a single production location, companies are building more flexible operations that can respond to regional demand and changing customer preferences.

As the automotive industry continues its transition toward cleaner transportation, investments in modern manufacturing facilities remain essential for supporting innovation and future growth. Kia’s latest expansion demonstrates how global automakers are preparing for the next phase of electric mobility by combining advanced production capabilities with strategic regional investments.
